PODCAST

Mmm // Cookies

A cookie is a baked snack that could be filled with whatever you want: chocolate, raisins, fruits. Just kidding, that is not the cookies I will be speaking about. Cookies in the Digital Media sense is a short piece of text that is sent to the browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari, etc) every time you visit or open a website. This is how a website "remembers" information about your visits and recognises what you most search for. Not only this, but cookies allow for websites to recommend suitable products or services to you specialised to your search history that is being transferred from your computer to your network.

Some of the information that cookies grab from your computer are Online Identifiers, IP Addresses, Login Information/Passwords, Browser, Language and Operating System. These are the main concepts it grabs so that it recognises from where you are logging in from and where you are living. But the user information cookies grab are different than what is from the computer, this includes; page views, purchase information, time stamps, referrals and privacy settings. All of this is so that a website understands who you are and what you like, that they do try to fit the site to best suit how you as a person would interact with efficiency.

However there is no need to worry too much about the cookies. There are a few positives and negatives about having them, but there are two types of cookies. The first of which are Session Cookies, these are cookies that temporarily get used only throughout the duration of time you are open on said session or website. On the contrary, there are Persistent Cookies where they maintain with the information grabbed, but as you have guessed, it keeps it even if the session is closed or expired.
