Business Cards // FOR and AGAINST

You might be wondering why have I stepped into a time machine and travelled back in time to when business cards was popular. I have news for you, that is wrong. Business Cards are still in use by many companies big or small and there are many reasons to why this is. I completely agree with you saying that they are outdated and mainly thrown away at first sight. Why are they used nowadays, let me tell you why.

As there are more companies open in the virtual world, this means that companies do not have an actual office to present themselves due to the ability to work at home. So the way that they make their clients is either promoting their company online, or they create business cards and hand them out as much as they can so they can be contacted.

Now the key to a successful business card is to do with the design that is implemented. Studies show that 72% of people make assumptions about a company or person only by looking and judging what they see in their business cards. Crazy right... From a small piece of card, we are read like a book. So in small terms, having a bad design is a bad company, and a great, appealing design is a good company they trust.

There are some good reasons to why business cards are still used in this world and I will give you a couple now. If you are at an event or a conference, you do not have enough time to talk to everyone there, so you give your greetings, converse with them and give a card as a follow-up contact so they know what is the best method to contact you. For all those creative people out there, try to make it as thoughtful and design worthy as possible because let me bring you a little secret; creative cards get shared more, meaning that promoting will come easy. Being the boss or manager is quite stressful when your employees are not working well; by giving them a business card, it encourages them to keep working as they are motivated and having cards makes them feel much more important.

Now that were have seen the positives, time to change the drift and head over to something we all try to avoid, the negatives. Social media has had such an impact to our society that it is now replacing the need of business cards. Not many people have a creative mindset, so what they think is amazing or great, might not be to other people, and this might be reflected on your company which you do not mean to do. Even the design aspects are not that great either, due to the very small space that it has, you have to be weary on what to add and what not to add. Also, this needs to be printed, which is not available for use online. What to so with the 100-1000 (maybe more) business cards you make, you do not have anywhere much to put it and even takes up some space if you are ordering an enormous amount. Finding where to share out your cards is another complications because you can go to events and give it out, but how about the says where you are not there, where do you plan to share them out. Now the biggest issue in my opinion. Imagine you printed out 2000 cards 6 months ago, meaning you would still have 800-900 cards left. What if I told you that the company give you a new phone number or even move out to a different location, you would have to create some new cards with these changes and what would happen to the other batch you still had, well you would have to throw away these cards and waste some money getting these new updated ones.

Well, as you can see, there are more reasons against business cards than for, and it does make sense. But this is all at the hand of whoever is making them or ordering them. Me personally, I would say a big no to the idea of getting or having business cards. But I haven't put out all the reasons for and against, this list continues more and more. The impracticality is there but the idea is genuine and it does show the etiquette of the company, but for this day and age, it wouldn't and doesn't fit in this world we live in now.
